Q: Does acupuncture hurt?

A: Acupuncture needles are very fine stainless steel hairlike needles. Often the patient doesn’t even realize that the needle has been inserted. There is no sharp pain as when a hyperdermic needle is inserted. There are some acupoints on the body that are more sensitive than others, but generally, there is no pain. What one might feel is the sensation of achieving “qi” which people have described as a feeling of dullness or numbness.

Q: How long does a typical treatment take?

A: Your initial appointment will take up to an hour and a half when a full medical history is taken and time is spent discussing your particular expectations and goals. Subsequent treatments run up to an hour. Herbal consultations can be completed in 30 minutes.

Q: Does acupuncture or Chinese medicine interfere with treatments my doctor is currently giving me?

A: In most cases, Chinese medicine can work synergistically with western medicine to enhance the healing process. We like to work with your doctor to deliver optimum care. We take particular care to learn as much as possible about your medical history, including medications you take, in order to prevent possible drug/herb interactions. Many medical doctors refer their patients to acupuncturists/herbalists for complementary medical care.
